Apple has rolled out iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 with security fixes for 163 vulnerabilities. Released on October 26, 2026, the update addresses problems affecting web browsing, system memory, privacy, and several built-in apps.
The most important fixes involve WebKit, the technology used by Safari and many in-app browsers. Apple warns that specially crafted web content could trigger code execution on an affected device.
Apple has not reported that these vulnerabilities are being actively exploited. However, users should not delay installing the update, especially because public technical details can help attackers identify unpatched devices.
WebKit and Kernel Flaws Receive Major Fixes
WebKit accounts for a significant portion of the security fixes. Some vulnerabilities involve memory-handling errors that could allow malicious web content to execute code.
The affected issues include:
- Use-after-free flaws: Problems that occur when software continues using memory after it has been released.
- Type confusion: Errors that cause software to handle data as the wrong type, potentially leading to memory corruption.
- Sandbox escapes: Weaknesses that could allow an attacker to move beyond the restrictions placed on browser content.
Apple also addressed CVE-2026-113897, a vulnerability that could allow a remote attacker to escape the Web Content sandbox. Another issue, CVE-2026-112690, was listed under App Store security and also concerns sandbox escape.
The update includes numerous kernel fixes as well. These address problems such as memory corruption, unexpected system crashes, and possible disclosure of kernel memory information.
Kernel vulnerabilities can become especially dangerous when combined with another flaw. For example, an attacker might first exploit a browser vulnerability and then attempt to use a kernel issue to gain deeper access to the device.
Privacy and Built-In App Vulnerabilities
The update also fixes issues across Apple services and applications, including Apple Intelligence, Hide My Email, Contacts, Calendar, CloudKit, Files, Photos, Siri, Shortcuts, and Screen Time.
Some of the reported risks include:
- Apple Intelligence: CVE-2026-86987 could expose sensitive user data on affected devices.
- Hide My Email: CVE-2026-112500 could reveal a user’s actual email address.
- Maps: CVE-2026-112707 could allow an app to identify other installed applications.
- CoreMedia: CVE-2026-86990 could allow a malicious app to access the camera without permission.
Apple also corrected file-processing vulnerabilities affecting components such as ImageIO, CoreGraphics, CoreAudio, FontParser, and Model I/O. Depending on the flaw, specially crafted files could cause crashes, expose memory, or potentially lead to code execution.
The release also includes fixes for vulnerabilities associated with recent iPhone jailbreak research. This demonstrates how security weaknesses discovered by researchers can affect the wider security of Apple devices.
Which Devices Should Update?
Apple released iOS 27.2 for supported iPhones, starting with the iPhone 11 generation, along with iPadOS 27.2 for compatible iPads.
Users who remain on the previous major operating system can also check for iOS 26.7.2 or iPadOS 26.7.2, which provide security fixes for supported older software versions.
To install the update:
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Select General, then Software Update.
- Download and install the available update.
Back up important data before installing, and allow the device to restart and complete the process.
The key takeaway: This release addresses a broad set of security weaknesses, including browser code execution and sandbox escape risks. Keeping Apple devices updated helps reduce exposure to known vulnerabilities and strengthens protection for personal and organizational data.
