WhatsApp has rolled out passkey-encrypted backups, a major upgrade that makes protecting chat history easier and more secure.
Instead of relying on passwords or lengthy encryption keys, WhatsApp now allows users to secure their backups using their phone’s built-in authentication — such as fingerprint, Face ID, or screen lock.
How it works?
This update removes the complexity that users faced in the past. Previously, enabling encrypted backups required creating a unique password or storing a long 64-digit encryption key. If the password was forgotten, the backup could not be restored.
With passkeys, WhatsApp takes care of the security in the background. The device creates a cryptographic key that stays securely stored on the phone’s hardware and cannot be accessed by WhatsApp, Meta, or cloud storage providers.
Passkey-encrypted backups apply the same end-to-end encryption already used for chats and calls. Photos, voice messages, documents, and chat history stored in cloud backups remain fully private, even if someone gains access to the Google Drive or iCloud account where the backup is stored.
The new system also adds better protection against cyber threats. Passkeys are more resistant to phishing, password theft, and credential stuffing attacks, since they rely on device-based authentication rather than something the user must remember or type.
This ensures that only the user — through biometric verification or a device screen lock — can access or restore their backup.
The feature is being rolled out gradually across Android and iOS devices. Once available, users can enable it by navigating to:
Settings → Chats → Chat Backup → End-to-end encrypted backup → Enable Passkey
With this update, WhatsApp has made strong security effortless. Backups can now be restored with just a tap or glance, offering peace of mind without the fear of losing access due to forgotten passwords. Personal memories, conversations, and shared media are protected with advanced encryption, while staying easy to access when switching or replacing devices.
In short, WhatsApp’s passkey-encrypted backups bring together simplicity, privacy, and modern security, ensuring that user data stays safe and accessible — only to the rightful owner.
