IRS-themed attacks are on the rise, targeting taxpayers’ mobile devices

With the U.S. tax deadline nearing, scammers are ramping up IRS-themed attacks. McAfee Labs reports a rise in mobile scams using fake IRS texts and websites to steal personal and financial data.

McAfee reports that in 2024, 76% of tax-related phishing scams targeted mobile users via text messages. These messages use shortened URLs to hide malicious links, often mimicking IRS websites like “irs.gov.tax-helping[.]com” to deceive taxpayers.

Scammers create urgency by claiming refunds are on hold or threatening legal action, tactics the IRS never uses.

How IRS Scams Work

IRS scams typically follow a two-step process. Victims first receive a fake message claiming to be from the IRS or a tax service, urging them to take immediate action. The message includes a link to a fraudulent website designed to look like an official IRS page.

Once on the fake site, victims are asked to provide sensitive details such as Social Security Numbers, bank information, or login credentials. Scammers use this data for identity theft, filing fraudulent tax returns, or selling it on the dark web.

Rising Threats and How to Stay Safe

McAfee’s research shows these scams are widespread, with one phishing campaign in 2024 accounting for 17.3% of blocked tax-related URLs. Scammers also impersonate tax preparation companies to appear more convincing.

To protect yourself:

  • Verify IRS Contacts – The IRS does not request personal details via text or email.
  • Avoid Clicking Links – Manually enter official website URLs instead.
  • Use Security Tools – Enable phishing protection and website blockers.
  • File Taxes Early – Prevent scammers from filing in your name.
  • Monitor Financial Activity – Set up alerts for suspicious transactions.

With tax scams on the rise, staying vigilant is key to avoiding fraud and identity theft.
