Google Chrome now has a new download system with alerts for potentially harmful files, enhancing user security.
Last year, Google Chrome introduced a revamped downloads interface on desktops, making it easier for users to manage their recent downloads. The new design features a more flexible and spacious UI and supports enhanced security features.
This update enables Chrome to provide more detailed and nuanced warning messages, aiding users in making informed decisions about their downloads.
Google Chrome Issues Warnings
According to Google blog reports, Chrome’s new downloads UI includes more detailed warning messages, replacing the old ones.
These messages provide better context about potential threats, helping users understand the risks more clearly.
Our older, space-limited warnings have been replaced with a redesigned system featuring AI-powered alerts from Google Safe Browsing:
- Suspicious Files: Low confidence in being harmful, unknown risk.
- Dangerous Files: High confidence in being harmful, high risk.
The warnings use different icons, colors, and text, helping users quickly assess the threat level and decide on the appropriate action.
Enhanced Protection: Automatic Deep Scans for More Downloads
Users with Enhanced Protection in Chrome get extra security. Suspicious files are sent for deep scanning before opening.
This process is highly effective, catching new malware and risky files. Files sent for deep scanning are over 50 times more likely to be flagged as malware than average downloads.
To reduce friction, Chrome now performs automatic deep scans for Enhanced Protection users without additional prompts.
Attackers are increasingly using encrypted archives (.zip, .7z, .rar) with passwords to hide malware from Safe Browsing and antivirus scans.
To address this, Chrome offers two protection mechanisms based on Safe Browsing mode:
- Enhanced Protection: Users enter the file’s password and send both to Safe Browsing for deep scanning. Files and passwords are deleted after scanning.
- Standard Protection: Users enter the password, but both the file and password remain local, with only metadata being checked.
Chrome’s Security team works closely with Google Safe Browsing, the Threat Analysis Group, and global researchers to stay ahead of attackers and adapt strategies based on the latest threats.
