Chrome 88 new update with a feature now checks for weak passwords, helps fix them.
Chrome 88’s Security Feature
The tech giant announced a host of new security features – Password Protection in a new update that is yet to be released Chrome’88 in the coming weeks.
However, the new feature to quickly check for weak or compromised passwords and remediate the issue.
To check for weak passwords, go to Settings > Passwords > Check passwords > Check Now to perform a safety check of your passwords.
However, weak passwords expose you to security risks and should be avoided.
Once weak passwords are detected:
- Chrome allows updating a stronger password, which can be generated on spot and stored
- Once updated, automatically Google will start scanning for weak passwords
- Click the “Review” button to change the saved password with a stronger one.
“We’ve all had moments where we’ve rushed to set up a new login, choosing a simple ‘name-of-your-pet’ password to get set up quickly,” Chrome product manager Ali Sarraf said.
Security Improvements
Password breaches remain a critical concern online, however, Google has seen a 37% reduction in compromised credentials stored in Chrome, as a result of Safety Check and other improvements launched in 2020.
Also, enabling iOS users to autofill their saved passwords in other apps and browsers.
In short, Google mentioned the new features with Chrome 88 will be rolled out over the coming weeks.
